Actually, that's incorrect.  DOS and Windows 95 both understand forward
slashes in directory separators; it's just COMMAND.COM that does not. 
The case of the DJGPP variable is read only by DJGPP programs, and while
there are some programs that can behave improperly if they see
backslashes, gcc is not one of them.

Your problem was probably somewhere else.  Nevertheless, it's strange
how many people report to have corrected installation problems by
switching the direction of the slashes...
