I could not even reproduce the hangup after removing -g -DDJGPP and inserting
-O again. (The -DDJGPP wasn't of any cause anyway, so forget about this).
It must have to do with some strange constellation. I would be interested
to hear if others who observed  the hang up using -O can always reproduce
the machine hang or if the effect occurs in the same spurious way.
