Subject: HD problems
Status: O

Hi!

I also had enormous problems with djgpp hanging during HD-transfers when I
first started using djgpp (still using 1.05. Yes, I know, I *am* going to
upgrade :-). I first became suspicious about my disk cache, Hyperdisk and
while trying to isolate the problem and making it reproducable I managed the
problem to occur with other things than djgpp (I had never had any problems
before though). For example xcopy:ing a huge directory to another place on
the hard disk made it happen all the time.

Now, the problem was *not* djgpp and *not* Hyperdisk as it turned out. It was
simple the number of wait states my computer used while accessing DRAM. When
I tried (desperate) to increase the number of wait states, everything started
to work again. And it was reproducable that the number of wait states actually
was the problem. It just wasn't the first thing to think of as being a problem
when it's the HD that isn't working...

I just can't really beleive that this could be the problem for all of you, but
I just might be the actual cause for some of you. Try increasing the wait states
, you may be surprised of the results!
