> the XMS interface of version 1.12 doesn't seem to work properly. This is mostly speculation: 1.12 uses the KEEPMEM header field to decide whether or not to swap out everything before spawning. I think it doesn't swap out if less than one MB was used, but that might not be appropriate for a 4MB system. So, I'd suggest using stubedit on make and gcc to reduce KEEPMEM to 0.
