I also have 486DX266 with DOS 6.2, but your program works for me.
It indeed returns 0x80000000, unless compiled with -O, in which
case the compiler correctly prints a warning about overflow
(under -Wall switch) and the program returns 0x7fffffff.
Did you use some other switches while compiling?  If not, it might
be useful to post your system configuration, because the fact your
system hangs might have nothing to do with this specific program.
