Dragging mouse-1 copies the marked text into the kill ring, and thus
automatically puts it also into the clipboard. Emacs works this way on
any platform that supports mouse.

Sure, this is the way to go. Personally, I only use the mouse for
commands which are simpler invoked from the menubar than by typing their
name into the minibuffer. It is very annoying to move my hand between
the keyboard and the mouse, so I try to avoid it.
