It's not. As long as your DJGPP.ENV file is in the root directory of
your installation, you should leave the DJDIR line as it is! The only
time you'd want to change it is if for some strange reason you decided
to move DJGPP.ENV. This could easily be causing the problem you
experience.
Other things to look out for:
1) Mixing v2.00 and v2.01 programs (you should replace all your old
programs).
2) Running in an LFN environment with NameNumericTail disabled in the
Win95 registry. There have been a few problems reported that are
related to the Windoze rename function and a slight bug (or misfeature)
therein.
3) Other things I don't know about, but somebody else here might. :)

You aren't specifying input and output files to be the same, are you?
Otherwise, I heard something about a deleted-files problem, but I don't
remember if it was related to Make or rhide. You may want to try
searching the mail archives.
