It's more or less proportional to the size and complexity of the program
you are compiling.  There is the basic overhead of the programs
themselves; the largest total being gcc (100k) + cc1 (1M).  To that you
must add roughly the size of the code you are compiling, and then an
unspecific amount based on the complexity of the structures it uses.  In
addition, such things as optimization dramatically increase the memory
requirements of the compiler.

Frequently Asked Questions list (v2/faq202b.zip), from absolute minimum
requirements to the "dream system," and also some tips on configuring
your computer to take maximum advantage of available memory.
