I had some strange problems (random crashes, DirectX programs not
working) when I installed DirectX5 for a 2MB Diamond Stealth Video 2000
(S3 Vision868). They were all fixed when I restored the original
drivers, via the DirectX setup program. This didn't seem to cause any
problems -- I could still run DirectX5 programs -- and it had the
advantage that I got the control centre back again.
Although my problem wasn't like yours, it might be worth your while
trying this. Alternatively, go to www.s3.com (I think) and see if there
are any later drivers for your card. Go for card- rather than chipset-
specific drivers as sometimes different manufacturers use the same
chipsets but modify them subtly -- this certainly happens with Cirrus
Logic, and possibly S3 as well.
