Could whoever's porting 2.9.x check if it's still there? With 2.7, I
couldn't reproduce it with ASCII 174, but ASCII 255 does break it.

If it's still broken, consider reporting it as a bug to <bug-gnu-utils AT gnu DOT org>.

As a workaround, you can filter your source through this command before
assembling:

sed "s/#.*$//"

(You'll need sed.)
