Don't trust in test utilities or Windows behavior. I have problems
with one SIMM slot in my motherboard.
If I put memory in this SIMM the gcc crashes increments from 2% to
80% when compiling the editmain.cc module of the editor (looks like
the preprocessor uses all the memory).
But W95 works 100% ok.
Only gcc shows it under Windows/DOS.
Under Linux the things are different.
I tried to make a memory tester but it never shows errors.
A big program to compile or a big tarred file are the best testers I
know.
My friend Laszlo told me that he uses a Linux kernel compilation to
test new RAMs ;-)

If you tried with only HIMEM.SYS loaded and you are shure your files
are not damaged then is the hard.
