First thing to do is to download the latest version of DJGPP and use
that.  To that end, point your Web browser to the URL
http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/zip-picker.html and follow the prompts.
This URL will also give you some specific installation instructions
for Windows 98, which are almost certainly missing from the CD you
have, because it's an old, pre-Windows 98 version.

The new file readme.1st which comes with the latest versions should be
more clearly written.

Please describe what problems did you see.  It is impossible to help
you without knowing what specific problems did you experience, except
saying that ``it works for everybody else'', including Windows 9X,
which hardly helps.

Many ``popular'' problems are already discussed in the DJGPP FAQ list
(get the file faq211b.zip from the zip-picker URL above), so it might
help reading its first chapters.
