I have now repartitioned, reformatted, and reinstalled FreeDOS, and
can clarify this bit.

Am trying to install this:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/freeimage/FreeImage3180.zip

Unzipping it from Linux apparently works, but may cause some other
problem, as discussed previously.

I have now, after some effort, managed to read the file from a USB
stick in FreeDOS (which, of course, does not read other drives than
FAT).

Either that, or copying it from the USB to the hard drive (or for that
matter, copying the file in Linux as tried earlier) leads to
UNZIP32.EXE saying "End-of-central-directory signature not found"

Unzipping it in Linux works fine, in any combination I have managed to
think up.
