Thanks a bunch Stefan!!  Great help!!!

You were right - my "self made footprints" were indeed the problem.  Once I 
replaced those with "canned" ones, the problem went away, and pcb displayed 
all my elements in a heap in the top left corner as I was expecting it to do.

Of course, I would have wished to see some sort of error message somewhere 
pointing me to the element(s) in error, in which case I could have solved the 
problem myself without bothering you.

Now that I got over this hump, my next step is to read up more on generating 
footprints to get my odd-ball elements taken care of and see what I got wrong 
there.

BTW - with the erroneous footprints removed, the xgsch2pcb GUI worked just fine 
too.
