Have you read

http://wiki.geda-project.org/geda:faq-gschem#how_do_i_configure_my_local_gafrc_to_find_my_local_symbol_directory

and related topics?

I have always started gschem from the command line from the directory
that contains my local gafrc file. If you want to start gschem from the
desktop it may be necessary to modify the global gafrc file -- I have
never tried that, maybe other users can give you a more detailed advice,
I am using Linux, not BSD.

When you say "I cant see them", do you mean when you uses "Add ->
Component" from menu? You have to click on the triangle symbols to
display entries in a sub folder in the file browser.

Or do you have these red warning symbols for missing symbols in your
schematic? That may be the result of an invalid entry in your gafrc
file. Or (guess) It may result from invalid symbols? You may use
gsymcheck to validate symbols.
