footprint=X, Y isn't good because it overloads the footprint
attribute. I say the most general and cleanest way is to use
“footprints=X, Y, Z” (note plural) and then choose the specific
footprint for an instance of the symbol by settings
“footprint=Y” (note singular).

I think someone (Kai-Martin?) made a patch or at least a design
mockup suggesting how it would be implemented where a heavyweight
symbol could provide a 'footprints=FOOTPRINT1, FOOTPRINT2,
FOOTPRINT3' attribute that can give the user choices.
