Steve: You're looking for DOS ports of various tools. There is the GNUish project, semi-associated with GNU. This is available on the SIMTEL20 set of archives (directory MSDOS.GNUISH), I forget the address but it's well- known, and on the St. Louis mirror of that archive at wuarchive.wustl.edu, in /mirrors/msdos/gnuish. IP address 128.252.135.4, if you don't have access to a name-server (like those of us who live in 3rd world countries or Japanese national universities :-). Use the usual "anonymous" login name and your email address as password for both of these archives. GNUish is not exactly GNU (since it's under DOS), nor does it have all the ports of all the tools. But it does make an attempt to pick a fairly high quality port from those available for each tool.
