This isn't a direct reply (as others have already answered), but just FYI, GNU software is recommended to only use the following utilities in makefiles (and hence configure / AutoConf / AutoTools): http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/Utilities-in-Makefiles.html#Utilities-in-Makefiles awk cat cmp cp diff echo egrep expr false grep install-info ln ls mkdir mv printf pwd rm rmdir sed sleep sort tar test touch tr true Of course they aren't always that strict (and it's admittedly hard to keep track), but still, it's good to know what is considered an acceptable minimum, at least in theory.
