The only place I find small screens to be a problem is on cheapo laptops, some of which have utterly horrible 1280x800. I tend to stay clear of those. Other than that, the current widescreen fad leaving you not enough vertical space is the biggest problem. For older machines I usually just stick a very cheap 2-3 generations out of date video card in and that's fine unless you're a gamer..
