recently (with 1.12m5) I've observed the following:
Removal of all that get-more-memory-under-dos stuff, emm386, qemm
etc., i.e. leaving back a simple "himem.sys" in the config, made
every gcc-stuff *much* faster - perhaps You'll try that ?!
